How to Replace Your Doorbell

Replacing a doorbell is one of the easiest home upgrades you can make. The wiring is low voltage and the whole job takes under 30 minutes.

What You'll Need

New Doorbell or Smart Doorbell

Choose a standard button or a smart camera doorbell like Ring, Blink, or Nest.

Screwdriver Set

For removing the old button and securing the new mounting plate.

Non-Contact Voltage Tester

Confirms the transformer circuit is off before you handle the wiring.

Step-by-Step Fix

Turn Off Power and Remove Old Button

Turn off the breaker. Unscrew the two mounting screws and pull the button forward. Take a photo of the wires before disconnecting anything.

Install Mounting Plate and Connect Wires

Feed wires through and screw the plate to the wall. Connect wires to terminals — polarity doesn't matter on most doorbells.

Attach Doorbell and Restore Power

Attach the doorbell to the plate. Restore power. For smart doorbells open the app and follow setup steps to connect to Wi-Fi.
